MEASUREMENTS OF THE TEMPERATURE OF PHASE CHANGE AND SUBCOOLING OF MATERIALS USED IN THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE (PCM)

  • Maciej Jaworski

Abstract

A simple method for the determination of selected thermal properties of PCM (Phase Change Materials) is described. The thermal properties under consideration are the temperature of phase change, subcooling and superheating phenomena. This technique allows the investigation of technical-grade materials, as the sample is sufficiently large. The resulting measurements for water-ethylene glycol mixtures (for different concentrations) are also presented. This kind of substance seems to be attractive as a thermal storage material, and can be used for the improvement of the performance characteristics of cooling systems based on thermoelectric refrigeration units.
