DERIVATION OF EXTENDED YOUNG'S FORMULA BY BALANCE METHOD

  • Paweł Zaręba

Abstract

In the paper a derivation of Young's formula has been presented. The formula is extended by an additional term defining the force caused by the linear tension. It is a material parameter dependent on all mutually contacting phases. The derivation is based on the balance method, described comprehensively in the given literature data. The results of the analysis point to a conclusion that in the case of fixed contact line of the three phases an additional force occurs which is directly proportional to linear tension, inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of the contact line of the three phases and is directed to the centre of this curvature. The existence of this force influences the balance conditions on the curved contact line of the three phases.
